Naltrexone is a narcotic antagonist and is used extensively in hospitals to reverse the effect of narcotics. It also has been used in drug treatment programs.
However, Naltrexone’s most wonderful attributes are little known. It improves the clinical state of patients with autoimmune diseases and can arrest cancer cell growth. Bernard Bihari, MD, a psychiatrist, discovered these attributes and promoted the use of Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN), especially for cancer. Much of his work can be reviewed on the website Low Dose Naltrexone.
Some of the most difficult diseases to treat are in the autoimmune classification (Crohn’s disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, and Fibromyalgia). We all know that we have not made spectacular progress in treating cancer.
The immune system has many functions which are dependent on a number of checks and balances. It fights off infections of all types and suppresses the growth of abnormal cells that could become cancer. If the immune system is disrupted, there may be an increase in inflammatory response that is necessary for tissue repair after injury. This uncontrolled inflammatory response may lead to those auto immune diseases listed above. Low Dose Naltrexone modulates this deregulation of the immune system.
There are many reports of success in treating auto immune diseases with LDN as it is known. Dr Jill Smith reports success in treating 17 cases of Crohn’s disease with an 89% response to treatment and a 67% remission rate. There are reports of treatment of all the other diseases including Rheumatoid Arthritis with response rates far greater than seen with TNF inhibitors. Fibromyalgia also responds nicely.
LDN used in cancer treatment also has its share of success stories. LDN works through two pathways to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Zagon discovered that LDN increases the level of opiod growth factor (OGFr) and Beta Endorphin and it is through these two pathways that it attacks cancer cells. OGF may also inhibit angiogenesis, which is the growth of blood supply to the tumor. LDN has been effective against a number of tumor types including breast and pancreatic cancer. Long term cures have also been reported. The website has a list of the different types of cancer treated by Dr Bihari and his results with more than 300 cases. His results are remarkable.
